GMB Press release
TALKS FAIL AT CHEMILINES WEMBLEY OVER PAY AND LAID OFF WORKERS

Strike action resumes as no movement in dispute

The strike day due on Wednesday 7th January 2009 which was postponed before Christmas to allow talks will now go ahead after a failure to find a solution to the pay dispute or to get the workers who have been laid off back to work.

Strike action is resumed on Wednesday 7th January by GMB members who work at Chemilines Ltd, Wembley in support of a pay claim. The strike begins at:

08.00 A.M, WEDNESDAY 7TH JANUARY 2009, CHEMILINES LTD, CHEMILINES HOUSE, ALPERTON LANE, WEMBLEY, HA0 1DX

The strike action is over a pay offer of 1% per quarter linked to productivity strings which was rejected by the workers. GMB members working at the firm voted by 100% in a secret ballot to take strike action.

The company pack, label and dispatch medicines and cosmetics from the site.

Strikers met again yesterday (Sunday), to plan their day of action, at the Brent Indian Association.

Tahir Bhatti, GMB Organiser said, “GMB members are very disappointed that their agreement to postpone strike action to allow for talks to take place to try to resolve the dispute at Chemilines have failed to get their work colleagues back to work or to make any progress on their pay dispute.

Wednesday‘s strike will reinforce to the owners, Ravi and Jagdish Karia, the determination of the workforce to continue the dispute.”

Details of the continuing protests against Israel's ongoing operation against Hamas in Gaza can be found on http://www.stopwar.org.uk/. There is a major demonstration on January 10th. Dawn Butler MP and Sarah Teather MP have now both issued press releases condemning Israel's attack on Gaza, which I will forward on to anyone who wants to read these. Dawn Butler was at the January 3rd demonstration in Central London. (BR 5/01/09). Dawn Butler has met with Bill Rammel and plans to meet with David Milliband. Her press release is on our notice board. (BR 6/01/09).

New date for Academy protest - February 4th at 7pm outside the Town Hall. This is the new date for the planning Committee meeting which will be considering the application to build a permanent Ark sponsored school on the sports ground. The Wembley Park Sports Ground site is currently under 24 hour security and is completely unavailable to the public. (BR 5/1/09). Before then we need to ensure the councillors have received lots of emails/letters about this. Also, we are involving Boris Johnson in his role as the person who gives final approval. So if any of you want to forward to him your objection now that would be useful.

There are a number of Woolworths and MFI shops in the Brent area. Staff affected should contact their unions immediately for advice. Redundancy ready reckoners abound on the internet. The link below is to a Government website and should be authoritative
http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/employment/employment-legislation/employment-guidance/page33157.html
If you are made redundant, you are also entitled to pay for holiday which you are entitled to but have not taken and, of course, payment in lieu of notice. Your union may have negotiated an enhanced redundancy package.
Other important aspects are mortgage protection and pension entitlements. Your union should advise on these.
As someone who has lived in this area for most of his life, the collapse of Woolworths is the collapse of an old friend and local icon. I am deeply shocked that this has happened.

Following the success of the Convention in Manchester, this conference will discuss the current crisis of capitalism and develop ideas for action in response to it. This organisation have been clear all along that the wealth exists in society to pay for essential needs - and now the way the Governments of the UK, EU and US have found this money at the drop of a hat proves what it have been saying. The poor should not be punished for the crisis of capitalism.

Link to the London Borough of Brent website with further information about the £15m deposited with Icelandic banks. I agree that the money will almost certainly be recovered, but there will be a delay before the Borough gets it. We are now well into the Council tax setting cycle, and Council tax is capped by the Government. Will Brent Council get its money back by the time the budget is set, in March, and make ends meet somehow, or will there be cuts, increased service charges and/or redundancies? (BR 9/11/08)

Brent TUC is deeply concerned by recent raids by immigration officials in Wembley. These are looking for workers to deport back to countries where they have been unable to find work, and may face danger from political enemies. It calls for such raids to stop, and for the status of all workers in the UK to be regularised.
